Sullivan Lake Area Logout – July 11th

July 11, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 4:00 pm PDT

American Pine Marten (Martes americana)

Trail:  Pacific Northwest Trail system (PNT Section 3)

Location:  Colville National Forest – Sullivan Lake Ranger District
Difficulty:  Intermediate – Difficult
Length:  Day Trips
Spots Available:  2-3 Spots Per Trip
Dates:  July, 8, 9, 10, 11, 22, 23, 24, 25
No prior experience is required for this project.

Volunteers will assist PNTA sawyers and crew leaders with logout (sawing and removing down trees) along the PNT and its alternate, feeder and neighboring trails in the Sullivan Lake Ranger District of the Colville National Forest.

Assisting with logout may involve:

  • Helping to carry tools and equipment to the worksite
  • “Swamping”– toss/disperse the limbs and log sections cut by the sawyers*
  • In Wilderness: Pull a two-person crosscut saw with a certified sawyer
  • Maintain corridor width — use a handsaw to thin saplings and prune limbs
  • Maintain/repair tread surface and its drainage features

* Note: Only the PNTA’s certified sawyers are permitted to operate chainsaws in service to our National Forest.

The project is rated intermediate to difficult due to more strenuous hiking involved. Trails in this area can be challenging with moderate and steep grades.

These trails make up routes along the Pacific Northwest Trail corridor that is most often used by thru-hikers to travel between Metaline Falls and Upper Priest Lake in Section 3. PNTA crews and volunteers did work to restore area trails in the 2018 season.
