National scenic trails can only be completed when large groups of people, just like you, join the trail community and commit themselves to the effort.
The PNT is still the newest of the national scenic trails, and much work has yet to be done, but 2024 will be a critical turning point for us to advance the effort.
For the last eight years, PNTA’s tireless advocacy efforts have shepherded the development of a PNT Comprehensive Plan to completion. Through our participation, we’ve held the line for the founding vision for the trail and ensured that the PNT will forever remain rugged and wild! On December 12th, the Chief of the Forest Service signed the plan and presented it to congress.
With an authorized plan in hand, 2024 will be the year that we can begin the work of the Optimal Location Review process, which will enable us to begin moving the PNT off of roads and into the breathtaking landscapes that were envisioned for the trail at the time of its designation.
We’ll also begin the work of Land Acquisition and Protection Planning, setting the gears in motion to secure permanent public access to the trail and protect the values that the trail was designated to conserve.
Of course we’ll also be continuing with our renowned conservation corps program, hiring local youth and young adults to build and maintain the trail across the region; and we’ll continue our efforts to refine navigation resources, producing the next iteration of trail maps and app data to continue to improve the hiking experience for trail users in years to come.
Adding these exciting new programs and sustaining the ones we’ve come to be known for will require the support and participation of our growing Pacific Northwest Trail Association community.
There’s never been a more exciting time to get involved!
