“As for the proposed national scenic trail from the Rockies to the sea…parts are wide open to road building, logging, mining, subdivision and every other kind of mangling. This is the evil the national trail could help dispel. Areas presently little known (except to wreckers) could survive to be cherished by the nation.”
The quote on the back is from famed Northwest guidebook author Harvey Manning and was included in a list of endorsements for the trail’s formal designation in the 1974 “PNT Manifesto” that was first published in Backpacker Magazine. The PNT is now one of the largest conservation projects in the Pacific Northwest, as it was always intended to be.
The crown to coast graphic on the front was first used by PNTA in the 1970’s and appeared on important documents of the time, including the hiking guide that the trail’s earliest hikers used to get from the Rockies to the sea.
