Our Trail Scouting program allows you to volunteer on your own schedule. With over 300 trail segments to monitor and maintain, volunteers just like you are our eyes and ears across the PNT. Trail scouting reports let us know about areas of trail which are overgrown with brush, blocked by downed trees, or have erosion problems.
To participate, select the trail you’d like to scout, download the trail scouting survey sheet and go on a hike! Fill and submit your form afterward to let us know how trail conditions were and receive credit for your volunteer time.

How to Go Trail Scouting
1. Select a Region
Use the map below to explore the Pacific Northwest Trail system.
Select the region you would like to explore to find trails in need of scouting this year.
2. Choose A Trail & Sign Up
Once you’ve chosen your region, select a trail in that area. To help you choose, we have included free copies of our PNT strip maps.
Once you’ve identified your trail, let us know you’ll be scouting it by signing up. Each region has its own sign-up page link in the section below.
3. Take A Scouting Hike
Once you’re signed up, you will receive an e-mail with a trail scouting form. Download or print this form and fill it out as you hike, documenting trail conditions along the way. When you’re back, please e-mail us the form at seherkhan@pnt.org
By providing this information, you can ensure that your scouting report will have double the impact! Not only is the information you collect helpful, the time you spend scouting is, too. Your volunteer hours may be used by the PNTA to unlock additional funding to support trail maintenance and trail building on the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.
