Project Description

Join us for a learn-by-doing volunteer experience on the newest addition to the PNT at Historic Mill Pond, a scenic, low-elevation recreation area near Metaline Falls.

At this event, PNTA crew leaders will teach volunteers how to restore the trail corridor by cutting downed trees, pruning brush and doing other common trail maintenance tasks.

Crosscut Saws — Crew leaders will give hands-on instruction to beginning sawyers in the art of the crosscut saw. Volunteers will learn how to use saws safely and efficiently by “reading logs” and assessing worksite hazards. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to train as a “swamper,” or a sawyer’s assistant. Swampers will remove cut logs and branches from the trail.

Note: this hands-on course will not result in a bucking sawyer certification, but it is meant to build your skills and confidence as a sawyer, while simultaneously completing annual maintenance of the PNT system.

Our training grounds will include: the new 0.9-mile Sullivan-Mill Connector that travels between Sullivan Lake Dam and the Historic Mill Pond System; the 2-mile Sullivan Creek Loop TR 565; and two 0.5-mile spurs: Mill Pond Flume TR 520, and Mill Pond South TR 550.

No trail crew experience is necessary: the PNTA provides tools, personal protective equipment, and training. Just bring yourself, your daypack, and a thirst for a rewarding day on the trail! See Resources (below) for Frequently Asked Questions and daypack recommendations.
