Project Description
The spectacular Devils Ridge Trail in the Pasayten Wilderness is legendary for its stunning views and rugged conditions as the Pacific Northwest Trail traverses the North Cascades.
This summer, we’re inviting volunteers to work alongside our Performance Trail Crews at three backcountry work parties in the Pasayten. If you love using crosscut saws, have backpacking or trail stewardship experience, and would like to get a taste of life on a backcountry trail crew, then this is the project for you!
Every year there is a lot of work to do in the Pasayten and a short amount of time to get the job done. The trail usually stays snowbound until late June and winter storms return again in late September. With your help, we can get this beautiful section of trail ready for everyone to enjoy — and have a lot of fun too!
Travel Time
The travel time needed to reach this remote worksite is considerable, but worth the trip. It is a 32-mile drive from Winthrop, Washington to Harts Pass Trailhead. From there, it is a 13-mile hike north on the Pacific Crest Trail to Holman Pass and the Devils Ridge Trail and another 1/2 mile to the basecamp at Barron Creek. The worksite may be a few miles west of basecamp.
Volunteer Shuttle
Drop-in volunteers are welcome to drive personal vehicles and join us for a day or two on the trail — or they are welcome to sign up for our volunteer shuttle and register for a four and a half day excursion.
On Thursday afternoon our Volunteer Coordinator will drive a shuttle from Sedro-Woolley to Harts Pass with space for 4 volunteers.
Shuttle riders will camp at the Harts Pass Campground that night and on Friday morning, hike to the established basecamp at Barron Creek near Holman Pass where the PCT meets the PNT.
Saturday through Sunday volunteers can choose to work as a group with the Volunteer Coordinator or alongside a PNTA Performance Crew logging out and re-benching the Devils Ridge Trail while enjoying the gorgeous North Cascades vistas and the rewards of wilderness trail work.
On Monday, shuttle riders will hike out and make the 4 hour return trip back to Sedro-Woolley.
Our Plan of Work
During this event a PNTA Performance Trail Crew will be working a 8-day hitch on the trail, based near Holman Pass and working their way west. Volunteers are welcome to join them over an extended weekend to help maintain the trail and keep it open for everyone to enjoy!
About Drop-in Work Parties
Drop-in Work Party is suitable for volunteers with previous experience who can also carry a backpack while hiking at least 15 miles in a day.
Drop-in volunteers make a difference by working alongside PNTA Performance Crews. PNTA staff work on site for the duration of the event, but volunteers are welcome to participate for as long as they like.
The PNTA provides tools, personal protective equipment, and training. Just bring yourself, your backpacking kit, and a thirst for a rewarding dew days on the trail. See the resources (below) for Frequently Asked Questions and gear recommendations.
This trip may be pack supported by our partners with the Backcountry Horsemen of Washington and/or the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
