Project Description

Let’s try this again! Our first attempt to clear Flume Creek TR 502 in June was cut short by a thunderstorm. Join us as we go for it again, and offer you an opportunity to learn how to use a crosscut saw along the way.

We will hike at a slow and steady pace up the eastern slope of Abercrombie Mountain, clearing logs along the way. Near the summit, we’ll enjoy wildflower meadows and breathtaking views of the Pend Oreille Valley.

Along the way, a PNTA crew leader will teach you how to use a two-person crosscut saw. Volunteers will learn how to work safely and anticipate hazards, how to “read logs” to predict bind, and come up with a cutting plan. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to help out by working as “swampers,” or a sawyer’s trusty assistant. Swampers work alongside sawyers to remove cut logs and branches from the trail.

Note: this hands-on course will NOT result in a bucking sawyer certification, but it is meant to build your skills and confidence as a sawyer, while simultaneously completing annual maintenance of the PNT system.

No trail crew experience is necessary: the PNTA provides tools, personal protective equipment, and training. Just bring yourself, your daypack, and a thirst for a rewarding day on the trail! See Resources (below) for Frequently Asked Questions and daypack recommendations.
